Dr. Judith Broder, The Soldiers' Project

This is a free public program – donations gratefully accepted

With the continuing U.S. military involvement in Afghanistan, there is a growing need for psychological service for military service members and their families. Recent studies indicate that as many as 35% Iraqi war veterans accessed medical health services upon returning home. Many were apprehensive to seek help for issues such as PTSD, depression and family problems through military channels, for fear it could adversely affect their careers. Reservist and National Guard members (making up 40% of the forces in Iraq) who will be returning to their communities in large numbers, are not eligible for the same medical coverage as active duty service members and will need services in the private sector, having suffered psychological injuries no less serious than the visible physical scars of war.

In 2005, Judith Broder, MD, launched The Soldiers Project offering mental health services for the military and their families. Psychological services are given absolutely free and the program has been set up to also treat families of the soldiers who can also be greatly affected. Currently, there are 400 licensed therapists participating in the program. Dr. Broder will discuss PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injury. Please join us as we hear an expert on this most frequently suffered condition afflicting our military service members.

Dr. Broder is both a psychiatrist and a psychoanalyst. A graduate of the University of Chicago, School of Medicine and a member of the Los Angeles Institute and Society for Psychoanalytic Studies, she is also a member of PSR – Physicians for Social Responsibility. She has a private practice in Los Angeles. She was honored this month as a recipient of the AMA Foundation's “Excellence in Medicine Award.”
